When Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker denounced New York City as a hateful place full of foreigners, young upstarts and queer people, New Yorkers couldn’t have been more confused: What was bad about any of that? The city’s diversity is what most folks find beautiful, mesmerising and addictive. Plus, NYC is a place where you’ll find yourself witnessing miracles several times a day – like when the angry-looking frat boy drops a dollar into a street busker’s basket, when flirty strangers exchange numbers on a subway, when buses run on time and new skyscrapers get built and you stumble into a hole-in-the-wall pub to find the most brilliant poetry reading you could ever imagine. It’s brash, it’s sexy, it’s brilliant.
